Employment Opportunity:

Chu Cho Environmental is seeking a Conservation Programs Coordinator and Biologist to be based at our Prince George, BC office. In this role you will work closely with our collaborators at Tsay Keh Dene Nation Lands and Resources Department, and with internal Chu Cho Environmental departments (e.g., terrestrial ecology, wildlife biology, fisheries biology, data science) to lead three of our conservation programs, including:

  • Tsay Keh Dene Nation Biodiversity Monitoring Program

  • Initiatives related to the Tsay Keh Den Nation and Earthworm Foundation Partnership

  • Initiatives related to progressing the conservation objectives of Tsay Keh Dene Nation.

 In addition, you will support our wildlife biology and/or fisheries biology teams as a project biologist for a diverse array of research programs and consulting projects with both field and desktop components, such as wildlife species inventory and monitoring, habitat assessment, spatial data analysis, and implantation of stewardship actions. The ideal candidate has strong project management, leadership and collaboration skills, experience working with Indigenous communities, organizations or governments, a deep understanding of the ecology and conservation concerns of north-central British Columbia, demonstrated proficiency in acquiring funding, and holds themselves to a high professional standard in their work.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and project manage three ongoing Chu Cho Environmental conservation programs, which requires collaboration across internal departments and with external collaborators, funders, and partners.

  • Contribute to the securement of annual program funding, including researching funding opportunities, background research, work plan scoping and development, budgeting, and proposal preparation.

  • Support the development and execution of biology projects, including both desktop and field-based projects and components.

  • Work autonomously and in a team to achieve project deliverables on time and on budget.

  • Collection and management of project data to ensure data accuracy and organization.

  • Complete quarterly financial and technical report preparation to articulate project progress and outcomes.

  • Must uphold Health, Safety and Environmental policies and reporting requirements.

Requirements:

  • M.Sc. degree in biology, ecology, conservation biology, or related field plus minimum 3 years relevant experience.

  • Registered Professional Biologist (RPBio) in good standing with the College of Applied Biology, or eligible within 6 months

  • Experience in project management, with track record of successfully leading large, multi-partner programs.

  • Strong logistical planning and problem solving skills.

  • Experience in project design, proposal development and fund securement.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the ecology, land use, and conservation issues in North-central British Columbia.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in formal, informal, and technical settings.

  • Strong field skills and experience.

  • Physically fit and comfortable conducting field work in remote locations and in all weather conditions.

  • Comfortable and/or willing to drive on radio-controlled forest service roads for long periods of time.

  • Willing to complete up to 14-day field shifts, and adaptable to changing schedules and requirements.

  • Ability to work both independently or as part of a team.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage conflicting demands.

  • High level of integrity and work ethic.

  • BC Class 5 driver’s license.

Preferred Experience:

  • Strong knowledge and experience with operational reclamation and restoration.

  • Experience directing and working in and around heavy machinery on active work sites, with a focus on implementing reclamation and restoration activities.

  • Experience using the Canadian systems of soil classification and Field Manual for Describing Terrestrial Ecosystems in British Columbia in the field.

  • Experience working with Indigenous communities, organizations or governments.

  • Experience with remote terrain navigations and using GPS.

  • Experience conducting vegetation, lichen, and wildlife habitat surveys is an asset.

  • Additional certifications/qualifications including Occupational First Aid Level 1, ATV or UTV training, etc. Please list on your resume.

  • R.P. Bio., P. Ag., or P. Geo. designation, or eligible within 36 months.

Position Type:

  • Full time permanent

Salary Range:

  • $80,000 - $100,000

  • March 1, 2025 or earlier
