Soil Scientist and Reclamation Specialist

Employment Opportunity:

Chu Cho Environmental is seeking an environmental professional with experience in soil classification and supervising reclamation. The work will include conducting soil classification on a variety of projects supervising and interacting with equipment operators and fellow contractors during activities. Example projects include road restoration, mine reclamation, and reclamation following mineral exploration. The ideal candidate has experience with project management, a demonstrated proficiency in completing field-based soil surveys, knowledge of and ability to complete field-based vegetation and lichen assessments.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead field-based soil classification surveys using the Canadian systems of soil classification and Field Manual for Describing Terrestrial Ecosystems in British Columbia.

  • Provide field level supervision of machine operators, and other professionals engaged in the implementation of operational reclamation activities, which will include machine earthworks, seeding, pre-disturbance surveys, and post treatment monitoring.

  • Mentor and train others, including field technicians and on-site Environmental Representatives, as required.

  • Liaise with Regulators and site level department managers, as required.

  • Mobilize and maintain field gear and equipment.

  • Scientific report writing.

  • Conduct desktop research.

  • Assist with the preparation of proposals.

  • Work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.

  • Conform and assist in administering the company Health, Safety and Environment policies.

Requirements:

  • A B.Sc. degree or diploma with a background and/or significant experience in a field related to soil science, reclamation, ecology, environmental science, forestry, or related with a focus on soil classification and reclamation.

  • Physically fit and able to conduct field work in all weather conditions.

  • Willing to complete up to 14-day field shifts, and adaptable to changing schedules.

  • Strong problem solving and hazard mitigation skills.

  • Ability to work in remote and rugged environments such as exploration and mining camps.

  • Ability to follow specific data collection methods and field procedures.

  • Positive attitude, willingness to learn and develop professionally, while enjoying the outdoors.

  • Comfortable and/or willing to safely drive on radio-controlled forest service roads for long periods of time.

  • Dependable and able to work independently as required.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Detail oriented.

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Ability to prioritize and manage conflicting demands.

  • High level of integrity and work ethic.

  • Valid BC Class 5 driver’s license.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge and experience with soil surveys and classification.

  • Experience in interpreting field and laboratory data on the physical, chemical, and biological composition of soil.

  • Experience directing and working in and around heavy machinery on active work sites, with a focus on implementing reclamation and restoration activities.

  • Experience with remote terrain navigations and using GPS.

  • Experience conducting vegetation and lichen surveys is an asset.

  • Additional certifications/qualifications including Occupational First Aid Level 1, ATV or UTV training, etc. Please list on your resume.

  • R.P. Bio., P. Ag., or P. Geo. designation, or eligible within 6 – 18 months.

$60,000.00- $70,000.00 per year
