Protecting Chuyaza | High Conservation Value Assessment
Chuyaza, located in Tsay Keh Dene territory, holds a rich history and cultural significance for the Tsay Keh Dene people. To protect this heritage and preserve the natural resources of the area, the Tsay Keh Dene Nation Lands and Resources department is collaborating with Chu Cho Environmental and non-profit organization Earthworm.
The team is completing a high conservation value assessment, which will help ensure responsible and sustainable sourcing in the region. Sabrina Delude, a member of the Tsay Keh Dene Nation, has joined the team to learn more about the connection between her people and their ancestral land.
During their visit, the team has been working with elders of the community, who hold deep knowledge and traditional practices related to the land. They have been able to hear firsthand stories of the importance of Chuyaza and the significance it holds for the community.
Elders hold a high place of respect in the Tsay Keh Dene culture, and the team is taking time to listen to their teachings and follow their instructions. By doing so, they hope to better understand the connection between the people, their traditions, and the land.
Through their field work and interviews with community members, the team is gaining a deeper appreciation for the land and the people who have lived there for generations. The hope is that by acknowledging the story of Chuyaza, its glory and heritage can be protected for future generations to come.
